The Plainfield Fire Protection District will be purchasing a HazSim Pro radiation and multi gas training monitor to assist firefighters with training scenarios thanks to a grant from Illinois American Water (IAW).

The IAW 2017 Firefighter Grant Program provides financial assistance to fire and emergency organizations serving communities in its service areas.

Illinois American Water’s Firefighter Grant Program awards grants to provide personal protective gear, communications equipment, firefighting tools, water handling equipment, training materials and classroom programs.

Plainfield Fire Chief David Riddle thanked Illinois American Water during the check presentation.

“The Board of Trustees and the members of the Plainfield Fire Protection District would like to express our sincere thanks to Illinois American Water for their generous grant program and for awarding grant funding to our Fire District,” said Riddle.

Boston MA – FOR EFFECTIVE TRAINING ONLY

The following is a training scenario used by Special Operations Command for a drill using their HazSim Pro training system.

Training Scenario

Boston Fire Hazmat crews respond to vehicle leaking unknown chemicals.

Boston Fire Hazmat units were called out early Wednesday afternoon after the driver of a sedan jumped a curb near Exeter Street and slammed into a tree.

Boston Police on scene noticed numerous 5-gallon chemical containers in the back of the vehicle which had toppled over, and were leaking. The driver reportedly got out and ran from the vehicle after the collision toward Storrow Drive , police said. At this time, fire officials could not comment on what the chemicals were but did confirm that the leaking containers did not leave the vehicle.

Hazmat and Firefighters were still on scene as of Wednesday afternoon.

Training we conducted this week using the HazSim. It worked out excellent.

Elizabeth Harman: Advancing Health and Safety Training for Firefighters and First Responders

“Good training can help firefighters and other first responders to avoid taking shortcuts while on the job. However, the training is only as good as the individual, supervisor, and leadership,” said Harman. “Major catastrophes and fatalities often occur because a decision was made to avoid a protective measure, and take a shortcut. For this reason, understanding and further cultivating a culture of workplace safety is key to ensuring every worker comes home safe.”
